The University has an exciting opportunity for an Application Developer within the Institute of Health and Wellbeing.

In this role, you will work on a wide range of software applications within the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics, part of the Glasgow Clinical Trials Unit. You will support a varied applications portfolio within a clinical research context and be responsible for the documentation needed to support software solutions for clinical trials.

A good understanding of the principles of managing data within the context of GDPR, GCP and ISO 27001 for Information Security would be useful but not essential as training and mentoring can be provided to the successful candidate.

Job Purpose

You will work on a wide range of software applications within the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics, part of the Glasgow Clinical Trials Unit. Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Contribute to the development of robust clinical trial software applications to a high standard and across multiple platforms, for use by commercial clients, clinical researchers, study participants and internal data management users.
2. Responsible for development and management of complex back-end clinical databases which support the Centre’s electronic data collection methods.
3. Responsible for production and maintenance of software development and computer systems documentation (e.g. requirements specifications, computer systems validation, testing documentation, system change management, user manuals).
4. Contribute to the provision of electronic data capture and similar IT services for the Centre’s internal and external users, including provision of training support for end-users (internal staff and external clients). Responsible for troubleshooting internal and external software computing problems via the Centre’s helpdesk facility and client user support routes.
5. Develop skills and contribute to the provision of innovative software solutions in response to technological change in the area of clinical data management. Contribute to the IT team, assisting with the building of a robust IT infrastructure in order to ensure availability, confidentiality and integrity of the Centre’s data.
6. Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with all relevant stakeholders, including Centre and University colleagues, external clients and study sponsors, engaging on requirements, working collaboratively on identifying solutions, improving efficiency and managing expectations. Liaise and meet with internal and external collaborators and take personal responsibility for entire sections of software development, ensuring completion of work to high standards and in accordance with strict timelines.
7. Responsible for ensuring quality in areas of responsibility, including development and review of documentation (e.g. standard operating procedures, guidelines and forms) to manage software development processes in accordance with Good Clinical Practice, ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO27001 (information security). Prepare for and participate in regulatory audits and inspections.
8. Provide senior staff, clients, collaborators and other stakeholders with regular updates and briefings to ensure that they have a clear understanding of status, progress and any emerging risks or issues. Also participate collaboratively in team meetings to share updates with colleagues, discuss issues and identify solutions.
9. Duties of the post outlined are not exhaustive and the post-holder will be expected to be co-operative and flexible, undertaking such duties as may be reasonably expected by management. The duties of the post will be subject to review in line with changing requirements, both internal and external. The nature of the post may require working outside of normal working hours.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9 (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent, in IT *Or: *Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
A2 Working knowledge of technical SQL programming, web development and .NET programming or with ability to show similar transferrable and adaptive programming knowledge.
A3 Significant software application programming expertise gained from previous experience across multiple projects.

Desirable:
B1 Knowledge of the requirements of ICH Good Clinical Practice and all other legal and regulatory requirements in the management and co-ordination of data or evidence of similar requirement to follow controlled working practices in an IT environment.

Skills

Essential:
C1 Specialist skills in the area of software application programming, with ability to develop skills in response to technological change and offer expert knowledge and advice at a technical level.
C2 Strong organisational skills, with ability to follow processes, create/maintain documentation and keep track of own workload deliverables
C3 Ability to work independently, as appropriate, and under supervision depending on the complexity of the task or project, assessing priorities and managing own workload effectively.
C4 Strong user-focussed approach with ability to understand and present information in an easy-to-understand format
C5 Ability to cope under pressure while maintaining a high level of accuracy
C6 Good interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work as part of a team with staff at all levels (both technical and non-technical).
C7 Reliable, trustworthy and able to maintain confidentiality.
C8 Flexible and committed approach to work

Experience

Essential:
E1 Experience in a software development role at an appropriate level of responsibility
E2 Relevant experience in developing web based electronic data capture systems.
E3 Relevant experience of producing computer systems supporting documentation (e.g. technical specifications, validation documentation, test specs, user manuals)

Desirable:
F1 Experience in working with NHS data, clinical trial data or similar.

Standard Terms and Conditions

Salary will be on the Technical and Specialist Grade, level 7, £36,382 – £40,927 per annum.

New entrants to the University will be required to serve a probationary period of 6 months.

The successful applicant will be eligible to join the University Superannuation Scheme. Further information regarding the scheme is available from the Superannuation Officer, who is also prepared to advise on questions relating to the transfer of Superannuation benefits.
