Head of Clinical Trial Statistics post, NHS Blood and Transplant
Salary: AfC Band 8b (£49,242 to £59,964 pa)
Location: Stoke Gifford, Bristol
NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is a Special Health Authority within the
NHS, responsible for optimising the supply of blood, organs, plasma and
tissues and raising the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of blood and
transplant services. A vacancy has arisen for a permanent Head of Clinical
Trial Statistics post in the Statistics and Clinical Studies team, tenable
at NHSBT’s offices in Stoke Gifford, North Bristol.The Statistics and Clinical Studies service of NHSBT comprises the NHSBT
Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) and an additional group of statisticians
responsible for the design and analysis of observational studies in organ
and tissue donation and transplantation, blood donation and transfusion
medicine. The NHSBT Clinical Trials Unit is responsible for the design,
conduct and analysis of clinical trials in all areas of NHSBT’s activity.
Our trials and analyses inform decision-making on developments in donation,
transplantation and transfusion, the clinical care of donors and patients,
and equity of access to treatment.We are looking to appoint a Head of Clinical Trial Statistics, who will
lead the group of statisticians in the CTU and who will plan, prioritise
and co-ordinate all statistical activities relating to clinical trials. The
post holder will play a key role in attracting new trial ideas and
collaborators and developing grant applications. They will lead on study
design, incorporating new methodologies as required. The Head of Clinical
Trial Statistics will work with the Head of Operations to prioritise and
coordinate work of the CTU and will act as an expert resource, advising and
mentoring others within the team and liaising with relevant clinicians and
other stakeholders. They will also act as a deputy for the Assistant
Director of Statistics and Clinical Studies as required, and be a member of
the senior management team.This post is an exciting opportunity for someone with a postgraduate
qualification in a statistical subject, a detailed knowledge of statistical
aspects of the design and analysis of clinical trials, experience in the
management of large multi-centre trials and substantial experience of
leading a team. The post holder will work as part of a large, enthusiastic
team of statisticians and be involved in extremely rewarding work using a
broad range of statistical skills. The post will involve collaborative work
with clinicians and others, both within and outside NHSBT, and so the
individual appointed will have excellent communication skills. The ability
to work to deadlines, both individually and as part of a team, is
